In my role as a future pharmacist clinician, this experience has provided me with a deep understanding of the different qualities that make a strong leader. These qualities can be categorized into four main areas: structural, human resources, political, and symbolic.
In terms of structural attributes, a leader should be adept at maintaining hierarchy, establishing rules, creating a vision and mission, and rewarding task completion. These aspects help in providing a framework for effective leadership.
Regarding human resources, a good leader should excel in developing relationships to overcome conflicts and foster a sense of self-accomplishment among team members. This involves understanding the importance of teamwork and effectively managing interpersonal dynamics.
On a political level, a competent leader should be skilled at building coalitions both internally and externally, as well as engaging in effective bargaining and negotiation. These abilities facilitate collaboration and enable the leader to navigate complex organizational landscapes.
Lastly, at the symbolic level, a capable leader should be able to incorporate rituals and ceremonies to foster a sense of unity and create lasting memories. They should also be skilled in articulating messages that align with organizational goals and inspire others to work towards achieving them.
During my Master studies in biomedical science at FAU, I had the chance to take on a leadership role when my research team and I were assigned a poster project to present at a research day event. Our project focused on exploring a potential new therapeutic drug for Alzheimer's disease. This experience allowed me to develop essential skills as a leader, such as setting clear goals and ensuring that all group members were motivated and encouraged to contribute to the success of the project.
One personal characteristic that I found particularly important was the ability to motivate and inspire team members to work together towards a common goal. By fostering a sense of shared purpose and enthusiasm, I was able to create a collaborative and driven environment where everyone felt motivated to give their best efforts.
Through this leadership opportunity, I learned the significance of effective communication, delegation, and recognizing individual strengths within the team. By leveraging these skills, I was able to guide and support my team throughout the project, ultimately achieving our goals and delivering a successful presentation.
Overall, this experience not only enhanced my leadership abilities but also reinforced the importance of teamwork and collective effort in achieving success in research projects.
