Being self-aware can provide valuable insights into the importance of recognizing our personal and professional limitations. It can also inspire us to take action to address those limitations and grow both personally and professionally. In an attempt to learn how to become more self-aware I watched the TedTalk “The secret of Becoming Mentally Strong” by Amy Morin. She started by explaining how sometimes our bad mental habits, even the most insignificant ones, hold us back from building mental strength. For example let’s say you are scrolling through your social media feed, and see someone posting pictures from their 100th vacation. According to Amy even the thought of envy could be holding you back from becoming mentally strong.I don’t necessarily agree with this though because envy is human nature, no matter how great of a person you are you will experience that feeling at least once throughout your life what matters is how you deal with it. I believe that sometimes envy can motivate people to want more for themselves/ out of life leading them to working harder and taking chances they never would have. I think what she meant was fixating on a person’s lifestyle could hold you back which is completely true because how are you moving on with your life when you are stuck on someone else’s.
She emphasized the importance of always self evaluating, making a list of things that you think mentally strong people do and seeing how many you check of, especially during trying times. This is something that I believe is incredibly important especially going into my APPEs as it’s going to be a new environment which might get overwhelming at times so regular self evaluation throughout, I feel, will really help me tremendously. Lastly she highlights the importance of taking small steps of change after that self evaluation step. This is also something that I 100% agree with, I used to think that in order to see improvement i would have to make huge changes but if my time back after probation has taught me anything its that you see the most improvement when you make small changes. For example just changing where I study, I went from my house to the library, really did help me improve because i saw that i got a lot more studying done. A change like this might seem inconsequential but after I saw the improvement, in studying at least, it got me thinking about what other small changes I could make and next thing you know I completely transformed my studying routine. |
